Late-summer thunderstorms, bringing hail, strong winds and a threat of tornadoes, could spread across the Plains and through the Upper Midwest on Saturday evening, forecasters warned.
Most of Minnesota and the northwest corner of Iowa were under tornado watches until 11 p.m. (12 p.m. ET). Nebraska, Kansas and northwest Missouri are also at risk for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, according to Michael Palmer, a Weather Channel meteorologist.
While tornadoes are usually unlikely in late August, a cold front clashing with high moisture will put the Heartland at risk of heavy storms once again, according to the National Weather Service.
North Dakota and South Dakota likely won't see twisters, but winds gusts could top 60 mph, Palmer said.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Danny — the first named hurricane of the Atlantic season — showed signs of weakening as it approached the Leeward Islands in the West Indies. By the time Danny reaches the islands Monday, it will likely be a tropical storm, according to Weather.com.
Tropical Storm Kilo, which is headed for Hawaii, is forecast to take an opposite approach and build to a hurricane by early next week, according to the National Weather Service.
