Millions of people across the East Coast and Midwest shouldn't put the shovels or umbrellas away just yet.
A fresh round of snow was set to drop 1 to 2 inches in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas through Wednesday, making for a treacherous morning commute during the region's second snowfall of the season, forecasters warned.
Temperatures will also fall to the freezing mark as the moderate snow tapers into light flurries before the evening rush hour, according to NBC Chicago. The cold weather was also causing freezing fog conditions from Michigan to Ohio.
The wintry nuisance comes as a band of moisture soaks the East Coast, carrying heavy rain that has triggered flood warnings across the southern and central Appalachians — in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Virginia.
Flooding in Gilmer County, about 80 miles north of Atlanta, was prompting evacuations early Wednesday after more than 2 inches of rain fell overnight, reported The Weather Channel.
The region could see an additional 1 to 2 inches — and even up to 3 inches — in rain through Wednesday.
Another day of rain was also set to drench major East Coast cities, making for a soggy Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony in New York City.
Some airports in the Northeast were reporting delays Wednesday morning — including about 45 minutes at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York, and more than an hour in Philadelphia.
The tail end of the storm will also bring heavy rain to South Florida on Thursday and Friday, forecasters said.
Winter, while still about three weeks away, could finally be coming to parts of the Northeast before the end of the week.
Northern Maine is forecast to see between 5 to 8 inches of snow over the next few days, while up to 3 inches could blanket parts of central Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
The Great Lakes and Plains have already been pummeled this week with a foot of snow in some parts. A wintry mix and heavy rains are being blamed for at least 14 deaths last week.
