Hurricane Ana was downgraded to a tropical storm late Sunday after soaking — but sparing — Hawaii.

The storm was churning south of the state with wind of 70 mph. A tropical storm watch was canceled for Oahu, the most populous island, but a flash-flood warning remained in place.

Hawaii had feared a hurricane hit, but the storm never made it closer than about 70 miles. “It looks like we’ve dodged a bullet yet again,” Mayor Kirk Caldwell of Honolulu said, according to The Associated Press.
