A member of Atlanta rapper Young Thug's gang was stabbed Sunday night at Fulton County Jail, authorities said, delaying a high-profile gang and racketeering trial.
Shannon Stillwell, 31, was stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate during a fight and is in stable condition, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Stillwell is one of six co-defendants in an ongoing trial of the Young Slime Life criminal street gang in Atlanta, which has ties to the national Bloods gang.
Judge Ural Glanville on Monday morning dismissed the court where the trial was set to continue because of a “medical issue with one of the participants.” Glanville said court would resume Tuesday.
It is not clear what led to the fight, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said. Willie Brown has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of prohibited items in the jailhouse attack, officials said.
Stillwell faces eight charges, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and violation of Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, a federal law that has been used to prosecute gangs. He has been in custody at the Fulton County Jail under the name Shannon Jackson since March 2022.
Stillwell and Brown were housed in the same zone, the sheriff's office said. Brown was initially arrested in 2020 by the East Point Police Department on charges including felony murder, felony cruelty to children and aggravated assault, according to arrest records.
Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, is accused of being a co-founder of YSL, which prosecutors have described as a criminal street gang. Williams is one of the six defendants in the ongoing trial.
Young Thug won a Grammy for song of the year for his contributions to Childish Gambino's "This Is America." He has also collaborated with Chris Brown, Travis Scott and Drake.
