Scientists on Sunday discovered deceased conjoined gray whale twins in Mexico's Laguna Ojo de Liebre in Baja, Calif. It is thought to be the first discovery of its kind.

The whales arebelieved to have been miscarried as a result of their condition. According to American Cetacean Society researcher Alisa Shculman-Janiger, it's possible the mother died as well due to the whales' underdevelopment.

Mexican environmental group Guerro Negro Verde uploaded additional photos of the whales to their Facebook page on Tuesday.
