A gunman who was allegedly disgruntled "over a bad business deal" remained at large Thursday, a day after one person was killed and another wounded at a Long Island firm.
Investigators from four police forces and the FBI continued to search for suspect Sang Ho Kim, with the hunt shifting to Putnam County north of New York City after the man's white Honda SUV was found abandoned there overnight.
Wednesday's shooting at the Savenergy light fixture company forced the closure of schools and businesses near the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City, New York.
Kim, 64, had once worked as a vendor at Savenergy.
The attack appeared to target a specific person in the office "over a bad business deal," Nassau County Police Chief Steven Skrynecki told reporters.
“He entered one room that was occupied by the owner, the CEO and another employee” Skynecki added. “He opened fire immediately.”
Police would not comment on what type of weapon was used or whether a gun was recovered. A warrant has been issued for Kim's arrest.
One victim died as a result of the 10 a.m. attack and the wounded individual underwent surgery on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
Police said the suspect fled in his SUV, but now believe he has changed vehicles or is traveling on mass transit.
Roosevelt Field Mall was locked down for several hours as a precaution and shoppers weren't allowed into the building while officers screened people as they left, police told NBC New York.
Garden City Schools also did not allow any unauthorized people inside the buildings as a precaution, officials told The Associated Press.
At nearby Nassau Community College, 18-year-old student Robert Brown said he huddled in a hallway for about two hours after police arrived on campus in search of the gunman.
"We saw Nassau County police running around the campus telling people to go inside," he told the AP. "It was a crazy feeling. I just ran into the nearest building."
Police said there was nothing to suggest the suspect was on a random shooting rampage.
“We do not believe at this point he is a threat to the general public,” Skrynecki told reporters. “But of course he is a very dangerous individual.”
Police urged anyone who sees Kim or his vehicle to call 911 immediately.
