An unanswered noise complaint was made about 55 minutes before a shooting at an Arizona home Saturday night that left two people dead and five others injured, police said.
"There was a lot of parties going on throughout the Yuma community with all the graduations and stuff, so yes, there was a call about 55 minutes beforehand, but the officers were also all tied up on the other calls for service," Yuma Police Chief Thomas Garrity said at a news conference Monday. "There was no indication that there was any type of violence or anything going wrong, which would've made it a priority call at that point."
Two people have been arrested.
Jose Lopez, 18, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and a count of disorderly conduct with a weapon, police said Tuesday. Aden Arviso, 19, was charged with false reporting and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
A house party was being held at a home in the 3800 block of S. J Edward Drive when an altercation led to a shooting Saturday night, Garrity said.
Officers responded to the home around 10:54 p.m. and found seven male victims.
Two were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. Police identified them as Danny Garcia, 19, and Ande Blackthunder, 20.
Three of the other victims, all of them ages 15 to 19, had been released from the hospital by Sunday morning, and two were flown to Phoenix Hospital, where they were stable.
Detectives with a warrant searched a home Monday evening, and additional evidence led to the arrests of Lopez and Arviso, police said. They did not detail what the evidence was.
A motive still has not been determined, but it was not a random act, Garrity said, adding that all of the people involved were known to one another.
Over 30 rounds were fired, and several weapons were recovered from the scene and are awaiting forensics testing, police said.
"Up to 100" guests were at the party, which was thrown by a relative of the homeowners while they were out of town, Garrity said. The homeowners have been cooperating, police said.
Off-duty officers who were in the area assisted, Garrity said, including a California Highway Patrol officer, a Yuma detective, two Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents and the wife of one of those agents, who is a nurse.
The investigation continues, and police continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward. A cash reward of up to $1,000 may be offered if the information leads to an arrest.
