Two Alabama men were charged Monday after three people were killed — including a 3-old-boy — and nine others were injured in a crash during an apparent weekend drag race, police said.

Clyde Lawson, 27, and Maurice Devonte Wedgeworth, 22, each face three counts of manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, state police spokesman Reginal King said in a statement.

Wedgeworth was among those injured, King said.

In a statement, King said the crash occurred on a county road two miles north of Eutaw, near the Mississippi state line, at 5:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET) Saturday. Wedgeworth was allegedly driving a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass; Lawson was in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Citing a pending investigation, King declined to discuss the circumstances of the crash or how the victims were injured.

Both men fled the scene, King said, but Wedgeworth later turned himself in at a hospital. Lawson was taken into custody in Huntsville, King said.

King told NBC News that Wedgeworth's vehicle appeared to have struck all 11 victims.

The 3-year-old boy was identified as Jhayden Pippen. Rodney Hutton, 30, and Jalesa Kiara Merritt, 22, were also killed. The eight additional victims included children who were 6, 7 and 9, police said.
