Three people were missing late Sunday in western Colorado after they were possibly caught in a large mudslide, according to officials.
The mudslide — estimated at 2 miles wide, 4 miles long and 250 feet deep — runs along Salt Creek Road near Vega State Park, east of Collbran, Colo., roughly 40 miles east of Grand Junction, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
"This slide is unbelievably big," Lt. Phil Stratton of the sheriff's office said in a statement.
A witness who called authorities described hearing a noise that "sounded much like a freight train," the sheriff's office said in the statement.
Rough weather, including rain, fell on the county over the course of the day, and "likely contributed to the cause of the slide," according to the statement.
The missing people were not named late Sunday, but the sheriff’s office said they were residents of the Collbran and Mesa areas.
Rescue crews with the Plateau Valley Fire Department were at the scene late Sunday, officials said.
