A 1-year-old girl was shot dead and an 18-year-old woman injured in a shooting in New Orleans, the city's police department said Thursday.

The teenager, whom police described as the child's caretaker, was walking with the baby just before 8:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. ET) on the 2800 block of South Saratoga Street when gunfire erupted, police said. After she and the baby girl were both shot, the wounded teenager ran into a residence and the people living there called police.

According to the statement by the New Orleans Police Department, the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital and the 18-year-old is in a stable condition.

Superintendent Ronal Serpas said of the two unknown men believed to be responsible: "These men took a baby's life tonight, and wounded a young woman. They don't deserve to walk freely among the people of New Orleans. They must answer for what they've done.

"When these men opened fire, it was still early, and people were still out and about in the neighborhood. We need people to come forward, and tell us what they know."

Police are currently investigating and are searching for a motive to the crime.
