A meth lab explosion that displaced 75 residents in Tennessee has landed one couple in jail.
The explosion at the Alta Loma Apartments, in Madison, incited by Kelly Wakefield, 27, and her boyfriend Michael Drury, 22, on Saturday destroyed eight apartments and displaced 75 people, police said. The couple is in the metro jail on a $150,000 bond each. "There was all sorts of evidence of meth cooking — they admitted their involvement," Kris Mumford, public information officer with the Metro police, told NBC News.
Both have prior convictions and are now charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and aggravated arson, police said. Drury has previous convictions for robbery and burglary while Wakefield has previous theft convictions.
Tennessee holds second place for the nation's meth lab incidents, according to the most recent data compiled by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. In 2012, there were 1,585 meth lab incidents in Tennessee — about 14 percent of the total 11,210 — behind 1,825 in Missouri.
