A 17-year-old boy was bitten by a shark Monday afternoon while he was boating with his father off Galveston, Texas.

The teen was said to be conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital, the Coast Guard said in a statement. Additional details were not immediately released.

The boat, carrying three people, was traveling to Galveston’s Yacht Basin when the incident occurred.

Authorities were called after the boat became disabled in the water.

The Coast Guard said the boy’s father was able to provide a tourniquet until help arrived.

The boat the teen was on may have gone several hours offshore before turning back to the yacht basin, NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston reported.

The 17-year-old was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, KPRC reported.
