A Tampa police officer was wounded and two other men were shot, one fatally, during an exchange of gunfire Saturday, police said.
The officer may have been saved by his bullet resistant vest, Tampa police said in a statement. One suspect was killed and another was wounded after officers responded to a 911 call about a disturbance between two men driving erratically at around 4 p.m., police spokesperson Andrea Davis said in a news release.
"We don't know who was firing, but at some point one of the suspects engaged the officer and he returned fire," Davis told reporters. "We don't know who how many shots anyone fired, who shot who."
Names of those involved were not immediately released. One of the men who was shot in the incident in a rear parking lot was pronounced dead at the scene; the condition of the second person who was shot was not released.
The officer who was shot is "breathing and conscious," Tampa police said on its Twitter page. Further details were not immediately released and what preceded the shooting remained unclear.
"Detectives are working to determine the details of the gun fire exchange and the timeline of events,” police said.
