The suspect in the disappearance of a University of Virginia student was denied bond on Thursday and is awaiting extradition from Texas, where he was captured Wednesday afternoon after a manhunt. Jesse Matthew, 32, did not fight extradition to Virginia on Thursday afternoon, hours after a judge in Galveston County, Texas, denied him bond on a charge of being a fugitive from justice. It was not clear when he would return to Virginia but it could be as soon as Friday, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said.
Matthew was charged earlier in the week with abduction with intent to defile in the case of Hannah Graham, 18, who went missing early on Sept. 13. He had not been seen since he sped away from the Charlottesville police station after briefly being interviewed, when he was only considered a person of interest in Graham's disappearance. She remains missing.
Police received a call reporting a suspicious person and a responding deputy found Matthew on a beach in the community of Gilchrist, where the suspect originally gave the deputy a false name, according to an arrest warrant. The deputy took him into custody after running the registration on the Blue Nissan Sentra the suspect had been driving. Matthew later gave his real name in county jail, the warrant said.
Matthew has not entered a plea in the case. In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Chief Longo said authorities did not know why the suspect was in Texas. He also issued a renewed plea for help finding Graham, urging realtors to look at vacant properties for signs of her and urging all members of the public to share any tips, no matter how small.
In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said Matthew “may be in jail for another day or two” before he is taken back to Virginia. Trochesset said Matthew was being held in an isolated unit so deputies could observe his behavior and protect him from people in custody. He added that Matthew “does not want to talk to anyone.”
