Searchers in Washington state were looking for a soldier who went missing during a training jump Friday, officials said.
The soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Tacoma was not identified.
A spokesman for the base said the soldier was last seen during a parachute jump from a plane over Mason County, west of the base, at around noon local time (3 p.m. ET). As of 10:15 ET the soldier had not been found.
"We’re searching a six mile diameter circle,” Ryan Spurling, Mason County sheriff's chief criminal deputy, told NBC station KING5. "It’s pretty rough terrain with a lot of timber."
The soldier is part of a special forces unit based at Lewis-McChord, KING5 reported. The soldier deployed a reserve parachute during the exercise, the station reported.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Police, volunteer search and rescue and the military are among the agencies searching for the soldier Friday night, the sheriff’s office said.
