In the wake of Savannah Guthrie releasing a new video pleading for the return of her mother, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized that the case is “still active” nearly six months after Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
There have been no major breaks in the case in the months since Nancy Guthrie, 84, went missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, in the early hours of Feb. 1. The FBI said earlier on July 1 that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance continues to be investigated as a kidnapping-for-ransom case.
Savannah posted a video message Monday on Instagram, pleading with the person who may have taken her mother to “do the right thing” and “tell us where to look for her.”
Nanos, who has been heading the investigation, spoke with NBC affiliate KVOA of Tucson on Monday after Savannah shared her most recent video. He stressed that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has not become a cold case.
“We still have DNA that’s not just one lab or two labs,” Nanos said. “These are labs all across the country that are talking to one another about how best to look at what they have in front of them for DNA evidence. And so I’m still positive we will resolve this case.”
It’s not clear why Savannah decided to release her latest message at this time. Law enforcement has not provided any major public updates on the investigation.
“We’re working this as hard as we can,” Nanos said. “There’s no lead too small. We, like Savannah today, we encourage you, if you know something, saw something, please let us know.”
Savannah’s previous plea for help came on “TODAY” on June 23, when she spoke briefly after a report by NBC News correspondent Liz Kreutz concerning a second note sent to media outlets following Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
“This is unusual and unprecedented to say the least, to be sitting here,” Savannah said on “TODAY” following the report. “I don’t have any comment on this story, and I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here.
“And so since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people, to really to beg people to come forward,” she continued. “Somebody knows something, and this is a new story today that is on your radar, but this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live, every day. And we are in agony. We cannot be at peace.”
