The family of a Utah toddler who survived a car crash that killed her mother last week said the 19-month-old girl appears fully recovered and will remain a link to the loved one they lost.
Lily Groesbeck is "rambunctious" and "she hasn't missed a note," Chad Groesbeck, the girl's grandfather, told NBC affiliate KSL as he held the girl in a joint interview with family members. "Everything she knew before she knows now."
Lily was pulled from an overturned car in the Spanish Fork River in Salt Lake City on March 7. Rescuers, whose efforts to save her were caught on video, said they believe the girl's mother, Jenny Groesbeck, called out to them. Jenny Groesbeck did not survive.
"Definitely when I saw the video, and hearing them talk back to the voice and say, ‘We’re coming, we’re here,’ ... it's incredible," said Jill Sanderson, Jenny Groesbeck's sister.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have reported that marijuana, painkillers and an unused syringe were found in Jenny Groesbeck's purse. But it is not clear if drugs played a part in the accident.
Jenny Groesbeck's brother, Garrett Groesbeck, said Jenny had been in a car accident that required back surgery less than a year ago. "And she was a medical assistant going to school, so hopefully that can bring some conclusion to some peoples' ideas," he said.
