As temperatures rise along the banks of Ohio's Vermilion River, nearby residents are bracing for the melting of a thick layer of ice and snow — and the flooding that comes with it.
"I'm terrified," Tina Miller told local NBC affiliate WKYC. She lives not far from the river's rapidly swelling banks, just upstream from Lake Erie, outside Cleveland, and has started moving things to the second floor of her home. In a previous flood, she said, water rose three feet inside the house and "destroyed everything."
The river has already risen more than 10 feet, swallowing parts of a bridge and nearby trees. Residents have moved their cars to higher ground. Some have put sandbags along the base of their exterior walls.
