Police do not think a University of Virginia student who has been missing for more than a week knew the man believed to be the last person seen with her. Charlottesville police have said that based on surveillance video, they suspect Jesse Matthew, 32, was the last person to see Hannah Graham, 18, before she vanished early on Sept. 13. On Tuesday, as the search for Graham continued and the hunt for Matthew — who has not been charged in the disappearance but who authorities have said they want to talk to — intensified, police told NBC News they had no reason to believe the two had met prior to that night.

Matthew is wanted on reckless driving charges for speeding away from a Charlottesville police station Saturday after a brief interview by police. Because the charges are misdemeanors, Matthew could not be arrested by out-of-state authorities if he's left Virginia, police said.

On Monday, police executed a second search of Matthew's apartment, leaving with several bags of evidence. Matthew, a patient technician in the operating room at the university's medical center, was not home at the time; he has not been seen since Saturday, when he stopped into the Charlottesville police station for an hour asking for a lawyer. In total, police have received 1,400 tips in the case, 300 of which were sent in Monday alone. Police are waiting on test results of clothes from Matthew's apartment and some electronic evidence gathered from Graham's phone.
