A freight train derailed early Saturday, scattering its cars along the tracks south of Socorro, N.M.
New Mexico State Police told NBC Albuquerque affiliate KOB that a broken track was the apparent cause for the derailment that happened 18 miles south of Socorro, at approximately 5 a.m. local time.
Four auto haulers fell off the tracks, police said, but none of the vehicles inside were dislodged.
The locomotive pulling the cars did not stray from the train tracks and little fuel spilled, according to KOB. No injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for BNSF Railway, operator for the train, told KOB the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.
