ICE officers shot a person during a “targeted enforcement operation” Thursday afternoon in New York, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. along Marble Hill Avenue as officers were seeking a “criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic” who had a prior conviction for grand larceny, DHS said in a statement Thursday evening.
“During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured,” the department said.
One senior law enforcement official told NBC News the person was apparently in a vehicle when at least one officer opened fire.
ICE officers rendered aid to the victim, who is alive and in a hospital, DHS said.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that early reports indicate officers surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in his car in the Marble Hill neighborhood and that the child was physically unharmed.
The injured person had multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs and weapons possession, and has associations to the Trinitarios gang, DHS said.
A senior official told NBC News earlier that the person has an open drug case.
The person had been arrested by the New York City Police Department in December 2023, but was released a few days later, DHS said.
Homeland Security and the FBI responded to the scene in addition to the NYPD, which confirmed a shooting by “federal law enforcement agents” on X.
“The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting. The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention,” the NYPD said.
The investigation is ongoing.
Mamdani called the shooting “an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation” in a statement on X.
“I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he wrote. “Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul said that she had been briefed on the shooting and that she expected a detailed report from federal authorities about what happened.
“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why,” she wrote on X.
