A well-known New York City radio personality who was accused last year of attempting to transport a 7-year-old girl from New Jersey to the Virgin Islands to have sex with her has died in jail.

Dave Herman, who hosted "The Dave Herman Rock and Roll Morning Show" for 27 years, had been accused of communicating online for several months with an undercover law enforcement officer posing as the mother of a young girl.

Herman allegedly tried to set up a meeting with the woman and her daughter, suggesting that they fly to his vacation home in St. Croix, and that he would pay for it. He then bought plane tickets for them to travel there, continuing to "discuss his plan to engage in sexual activity" with the girl, prosecutors said.

Herman was arrested at the airport in St. Croix and brought back to New Jersey.

The status of his case was not immediately available. It's not clear how he died.
