A Bryan College senior on Monday made a lay-up, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot in a row —all in 30 seconds and with an injured finger he had shattered playing soccer.
Gustavo Angel Tamayo won $10,000 in tuition money — and the basketball team's admiration — for his impressive feat.
"I've never played basketball in my life," Tamayo, who plays center midfielder on the Tennessee college's soccer team, told NBC News Tuesday. He said some of the basketball players attempted to beat his performance, but failed.
"None of them could make it," Tamayo said.
The 23-year-old grew up in London with his parents and two brothers. The family was granted asylum there by the British government when Tamayo was only six. When he called his parents to let them know he had just won $10,000, he said they didn't believe it at first.
"My mom started crying, dad was overwhelmed," he said. "Right now it’s a great blessing, right now, in the situation we’re in." He said the money will go to his tuition.
Tamayo, who will graduate in May, said he has been working on his soccer resume and hopes to land a spot on a professional team "anywhere I can."
"The dream is just to make it," he said.
