Further testing is required to determine the cause of death of former Iowa and New York Giants safety Tyler Sash, who was found dead at his Iowa home at the age of 27 on Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office said.

"The autopsy revealed no acute trauma," the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner said in a statement Wednesday. "The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation and additional laboratory testing."

Sash, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants during his two seasons with the team and was a star safety with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, was found dead inside his Oksaloosa home at around 10 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Sash started in 37 games as Hawkeye and ranks fourth all-time in the Big Ten Conference with 392 interception return yards, according to the Hawkeyes website. He tied Iowa's single-game record for the most interceptions with three picks against Iowa State in 2009.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz offered his condolences to Sash’s family and said Sash was "a special young man."

"Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the Sash family. A very difficult ordeal to deal with right now," Ferentz told reporters Wednesday.

The Hawkeyes will pay tribute to Sash during Saturday’s game against Iowa State, Ferentz said.

Sash was selected by the New York Giants in the sixth round in 2011 and won a Super Bowl ring when the Giants beat the New England Patriots at the end of that season. He was cut by the Giants after training camp in 2013.
