Real estate heir Robert Durst was indicted Wednesday on two weapons charges in Louisiana, counts that have kept him from being extradited to Los Angeles to face a murder charge there.

Durst, a millionaire charged in the 2000 death of his confidant, Susan Berman, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm and an illegal drug for five ounces of marijuana agents found in his New Orleans hotel, Assistant District Attorney Chris Bowman told the Associated Press.

Durst, 71, had been arrested but not formally charged for the .38-caliber revolver authorities say was in his hotel room on March 14. He was arrested March 15 on the Los Angeles warrant, and arrested separately the next day for the weapons charges.

His defense had filed a motion to get the Louisiana charges dropped so they could take him to Los Angeles to face the murder charge.

His attorneys have said the weapons charges arrest was illegal because FBI agents didn't have a search warrant for Durst's hotel room.
