The deputy from Montcalm County Sheriff’s Department has undergone surgery and was in a stable condition, a statement issued Saturday added. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened Friday, when officers from several law enforcement agencies were in the process of serving an arrest warrant on the suspect for alleged felonious assault, the statement said.

According to NBC station WOOD, the officer was hit in the side by the crossbow bolt. He was flown to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, about 40 miles southwest of Cato Township.

The Michigan State Police said an investigation was being conducted into the incident.
