A burning body was discovered in a driveway of a home in Northeast Philadelphia early Tuesday in a death that police described as “suspicious.”
The Philadelphia police and fire departments responded to a report of a fire in a driveway in the 8000 block of Leonard Street shortly after 3 a.m. and found a man “with severe burns laying in the driveway,” officials said in a news release.
The man, whose age was not known, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:23 a.m.
A gas can and struck matches were found near the body, police said.
The body was taken to the medical examiner's office, and the investigation continues. The Philadelphia medical examiner's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A fence neighboring the driveway appeared to be damaged by the fire, and NBC Philadelphia reported a police dog was sniffing for clues early Tuesday.
