Rescue crews were unable to save a man Friday night who was trapped by an avalanche in northern Utah, officials told NBC News.
The avalanche struck around 6 p.m. (8 p.m. ET) near the Whitney Reservoir, a popular area for scenic views of the Uinta Mountains. The man was snowmobiling when he got plowed over by the landslide, said Summit County Sheriff David Edmunds.
His family, who was with him at the time, was able to pull him out, but medical teams pronounced him dead at the scene. The man was removed from the debris before midnight, authorities said.
They wouldn't confirm his identity.
On Friday morning, the Utah Avalanche Center issued a moderate avalanche advisory, warning a “Level 2 danger in the Logan Area backcountry is possible."
Since 2003, 41 people have died in avalanches in Utah, ranked the No. 3 state in the country for overall avalanche-related deaths.
Meanwhile, the area of the latest fatality in Summit County remained open Saturday, although the sheriff’s department is asking visitors to be cautious.
