A Iowa man was arrested near the White House Wednesday and found to have a rifle, ammunition and a knife in his vehicle.
Just after 1 p.m., R. J. "Renae" Kapheim, 41, approached a Sercret Service Uniformed Division officer near the White House, officials said.
Kapheim, of Davenport, allegedly told the officer "someone in Iowa told him to drive to the White House," Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary told NBC News.
When Secret Service officers found Kapheim's car, a search revealed a .30-30-caliber rifle along with 40 rounds of ammunition in the trunk of his 2013 Volkswagen Passat, officials said. NBC Washington affiliate WRC said Kapheim also had a 6-inch knife. Kapheim has been charged with having an unregistered firearm, but other charges are pending, officials said.
The incident occurred on the same day that Acting Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy testified before Congress about low morale that has plagued the agency over the last few years and led to some headline-making blunders.
