"I was about a mile and a half from here on 9/11, and I'll never forget that day," Rosen said as he held a small Union Jack flag. "I'm so happy that he came here to pay his respects to what happened on that tragic day. I think it was very important that he was here."

Charles waved as he passed Rosen, who was standing on the street. Rosen described him as a "funny guy" and said he hoped the king returned to New York.

Mamdani said he would ask King Charles to return Koh-i-Noor diamond

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that he would probably encourage Charles to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond, one of the most famous diamonds in the world, to India.

"If I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Kohinoor diamond," Mamdani said today at a news conference ahead of the 9/11 memorial event attended by the royals.

The Koh-i-Noor diamond is part of the British crown jewels, and it has previously been set into the crowns worn by British queens. Its exact origins are unknown, but it was most likely discovered in South India in the 13th century. Many Indians and students of colonialism see it as a symbol of the British Empire and the domination and plunder of imperialism. Pakistan has also raised a separate claim to the diamond previously.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Charles delivers pointed message on U.S. visit amid rising tensions

King Charles III is heading to New York from Washington on Wednesday, leaving a trail of raised eyebrows and knowing laughs.

Between quips about history and plenty of praise for America’s place in the world, the British monarch’s speech to Congress on Tuesday paired levity with pointed reminders of alliances, obligations and shared values — soft-edged rebuttals to some of the very positions aired by President Donald Trump.

With the relationship between the Unites States and the United Kingdom fraying, Charles used humor and history to try to steady the alliance, while quietly pushing back and making the case that, disagreements and all, the “special” relationship still has work to do.

Support for NATO, inclusivity and the “defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people” each featured in a series of indirect rejoinders to Trump in his speech.

British monarchs are subject to rules and norms meant to prevent them from taking overtly political stands. Asked about Trump’s comments about Iran, a palace spokesperson told NBC News: “The king is naturally mindful of his government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.’

Royals are not expected to meet with Epstein survivors during state visit

When Charles’ state visit was officially announced in March, a Buckingham Palace official told NBC News that the royals would not meet Jeffrey Epstein survivors following legal advice that it could risk prejudicing police investigations and any future legal action.

That includes the probe into the king’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, over accusations of misconduct in public office in connection with allegations of sharing confidential trade documents with Epstein. Andrew also faced allegations of sexual abuse from Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre and settled the case for an undisclosed amount in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing.

The former prince, who was stripped of his title over the allegations, has denied all the accusations against him and has said he regretted his friendship with Epstein, which continued after the late financier was convicted for soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008. In addition, multiple U.K. police forces have said they are assessing Epstein-related allegations against Andrew.

“We fully understand and appreciate the survivors’ and their advocates’ position, but can only reiterate that anything arising from such meeting that could potentially impact on ongoing police inquiries and assessments, and any potential legal action that could result from that, would be to the detriment of the survivors themselves in their pursuit of justice,” a palace spokesperson said ahead of the visit.

“His Majesty’s constitutional position, not least with regards to the judicial process, is such that even though the risk may be small that a meeting or any public comments could impact on the proper course of the law, that is a risk that we simply can’t take, for the best interest of the survivors themselves.”

In a statement in October, when Andrew was stripped of his royal titles, the king and queen said their “thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”

King Charles reaffirms 'special' relationship with U.S. amid tensions over Iran war

King Charles III reaffirmed the United Kingdom and the United States’ long “special” relationship yesterday, calling it a “story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership” born out of “bitter divisions of 250 years ago.”

In a rare speech to Congress, he marked the landmark anniversary of America’s independence from British rule, and he nodded to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who addressed Congress from under the same “watchful eye of the Statue of Freedom above us” 35 years ago.

“From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history.”
