Lindsay Clancy’s attorney spoke out for the first time Tuesday since her state murder trial ended in a mistrial, including calling on President Donald Trump to pardon his client.

“I’d like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out on this case. Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady. The type of person she is, what she has been through, and consider a pardon,” Kevin Reddington said Tuesday on “Good Morning America.”

The request in the wide-ranging interview about the high-profile case was unusual, considering the president can only pardon federal crimes. On Friday, Trump weighed in on the mistrial and said he had been following the case.

Reddington did not immediately respond to NBC News’ requests for comment.

Asked for comment, a White House official said presidential pardons apply only to federal convictions.

Clancy was charged in the strangulation deaths of her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months old — at their Massachusetts home in January 2023. She had thrown herself out of her bedroom window in a suicide attempt that left her paralyzed.

Throughout the trial, Reddington argued that Clancy was in the throes of postpartum psychosis and acted on auditory hallucinations that compelled her to carry out the killings. Prosecutors, however, said that Clancy was aware of her actions and planned out the killings ahead of time.

After 38 hours of deliberations, the jury could not come to a unanimous agreement. The judge officially declared a mistrial after Reddington’s last-minute effort for an emergency stay on the decision.

Reddington also said he believed the 11-1 jury split favored not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility and that one holdout wanted to convict. He does not know that for sure, though, and said he has not spoken with any of the jurors.

He was also asked about some of his comments after court Friday, specifically that he said he “crushed the prosecution in court.”

“It’s bravado,” he said. “You know, that’s after the fact, and you know, the emotions run high, and we just finished a six-, seven-week trial.”

But he added that he didn’t regret the comment and that he thinks the defense was very strong.

Although he was angry after the jury was hung, Reddington said, he defends the right of the juror “to be a holdout for forever,” noting that’s how the American judicial system works.

Reddington said he was upset specifically because the juror was not following the law.

“That’s not right, and that’s why I was upset,” he said.

The commonwealth of Massachusetts now has to decide whether to retry Clancy or offer her a plea deal. Reddington said he hopes to work with District Attorney Timothy Cruz to figure something out.

“I hope, however, after sitting through this trial and seeing the evidence that was presented from the government, as well as from the defense, that [Cruz] would revisit that issue and hopefully would be able to work something out that would be acceptable to both sides,” he said Tuesday.

During the interview, Reddington also spoke about his client, calling Clancy “intelligent,” “hardworking” and an “incredible person.”

“I do feel a very strong bond with Lindsay because of the type of person she is,” he said, noting that he has previously said Clancy is like a daughter to him.

Patrick Clancy also speaks out

Lawyers for Clancy’s ex-husband and the father of the three slain children also spoke out Tuesday, slamming online sleuths and true-crime creators who pushed theories that Patrick Clancy was actually the one who carried out the murders.

In a new statement, his lawyers called it a “campaign of misinformation” that was “publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims.”

“This campaign, now fueled by insatiable media coverage, remains at a fever pitch and has resulted in real life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life,” the Tuesday statement said.

“Patrick has no choice but to address this situation — with the clear goal of stopping injurious behavior, creating accountability for lies that are self-serving to the perpetrators, and being able to return his attention to what matters: preserving the memory of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy and supporting other women facing perinatal mental health challenges,” the statement continued.

The statement added that “every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally” and that “law enforcement has been notified.”

Reddington on Tuesday noted that the Clancy family was torn apart by his client’s postpartum psychosis and blamed one of the doctors she reached out to for help, who he said overprescribed her with psychiatric medications.

“I just am horrified at what women have to deal with postpartum,” Reddington told “GMA.”

“Dealing with postpartum depression, dealing with, God forbid, postpartum psychosis and the horrific actions that occur as a result of that,” he continued. “People do not understand or know what they are doing, and it is real, and it is frightening.”
