An teen was injured after shooting himself with a "crude homemade shotgun," officials in Arizona said.

The 13-year-old was attempting to fire the weapon when he was struck by part of it in the ribcage, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities found the boy after receiving a call that a juvenile had been shot just after 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET) in Buckeye, Arizona.

The injured teen was airlifted to a local children’s hospital for surgery. His condition was unknown early Monday.
