Michael Alig, the notorious New York City party animal whose reign as "King of the Club Kids" was toppled after he was convicted of brutally murdering and dismembering his roommate, is scheduled to be released from prison next month after spending nearly two decades behind bars, a New York Department of Corrections spokesman told NBC News.
Alig, the mastermind behind some of the most extravagant Manhattan bacchanals of the 1990s, pleaded guilty in 1997 to killing and chopping up Andre "Angel" Menendez before dumping his body in the Hudson River.
His "conditional release" from Mid-State Correctional Facility in upstate New York is set for May 5, the spokesman said. Alig has served 17 years in various New York prisons.
Alig, portrayed by former child star Macaulay Culkin in a 2003 film chronicling Alig's drug-addled exploits, pleaded guilty to manslaughter along with an accomplice, Robert Riggs. He was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
