Eight people injured in the fiery collision of a commuter train and an SUV in the New York suburbs remained hospitalized on Wednesday, including one in critical condition, hospital officials said.

In all, 12 people were taken to Westchester Medical Center after the crash, which also killed six people. Doctors at the hospital said the injuries ranged from burns and smoke inhalation to cuts and bruises.

The injuries “weren’t as serious as they could be,” said Joseph Turkowski, the burn director. “We could have received a lot more patients, a lot more serious injuries, and it could have resulted in a lot more deaths.”
