One person has died and 13 others are injured after a man drove into a children’s birthday party in Maryland in a hit and run Saturday night, police said.
The vehicle “struck several individuals gathered in front of a residence” for the party just after 10 p.m., Bladensburg’s police department said in a statement early Sunday morning.
The deceased victim was identified by police as 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, of Washington, D.C.
Officials said the driver of the vehicle “fled the scene on foot after the collision.”
The driver was identified as a 66-year-old man from Washington, D.C., though his name was not disclosed. He turned himself in and was interviewed by a crash investigator, police said in a Sunday update.
Authorities are consulting with the Prince George’s County state’s attorney and criminal charges are pending against the driver.
Video of the scene Saturday night by Potomac Press showed police and firefighters at the scene of a home with a broken white tent out front.
Thirteen others were injured in the collision, including five adults and eight children ranging in age from 1 to 17 years old.
Six of the children were treated and released, and one was admitted to a hospital and is in stable condition. Three adult victims were admitted to the hospital and are in stable condition, one is pending treatment, and another has been released, police said.
Earlier on Sunday, the Prince George’s Fire Department said two children, including an infant, were in critical condition.
