Nine members of a Washington state high school boy's basketball team were hospitalized Saturday night after their bus drifted off the road and then rolled onto its side, according to Washington State Patrol.
The driver of the bus, which was carrying 12 basketball players and three coaches from King's High School in Seattle, told police the brakes gave out while she was driving the team back from a game in Mount Vernon, said Mark Francis with the Washington State Patrol.
The bus drifted off Interstate 5 and into a ditch before making its way back onto the roadway, where it hit a curb and rolled over, according to an incident report from Washington State Patrol. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Deborah Clark, was also injured, according to the report. All ten injuries are considered minor, Francis said. The incident is under investigation, and charges are pending, he said.
Meanwhile, in a separate basketball team mishap, a plane carrying the Mississippi State Bulldogs home from a game against the Missouri Tigers had to make an emergency landing in St. Louis Saturday night after a flight attendant announced that the plane had lost an engine, according to a tweet from head coach Rick Ray. Everyone on board was safe but "rattled," according to a tweet on the MSU Men's Basketball page, and the team was completing their trip by bus.
