While the Secret Service tries to figure out a permanent way to stop intruders, the White House fence is getting new topping of sharp metal spikes beginning Wednesday.
The spikes are part of temporary measures to end the parade of fence jumpers and other intruders at the White House that has put the Secret Service in a harsh spotlight.
Just two weeks ago, Army veteran Omar Gonzalez was sentenced to prison for making it all the way to the East Room of the White House last year — with a knife.
The spikes, which can be moved and removed as needed, were designed the Secret Service itself, and installation is expected to take about six weeks.
They'll stay there "until a long-term solution is implemented," the agency said Tuesday.
