All four people aboard a small plane were killed Wednesday night when the twin-engine craft crashed shortly after takeoff near the Southern New Mexico Fair Grounds in Las Cruces, state police said.

The plane, a twin-engine fixed-winged aircraft flying from Las Cruces to Phoenix, was fully engulfed in flames after it crashed about a mile south of Interstate 10, state police said. There were no immediate reports of injuries on the ground in the crash, which occurred about 7 p.m. (9 p.m. ET). The annual fair doesn't open until Oct. 1.
