Five people were killed and another person was seriously injured after a vehicle failed to yield the right of way and collided with an Amtrak train in Colorado on Sunday morning, the state patrol said.
Two of the victims were adults, and four were children, NBC station KUSA of Denver reported. All six were inside the vehicle, and the one to survive, a young girl, was airlifted to a nearby hospital, the state patrol said.
All were wearing seat belts, investigators said. Neither drugs nor alcohol was suspected, but the state patrol said failure to yield the right of way was being investigated as the "primary contributing factor" in the accident just after 10 a.m. (noon ET) in the southern part of the state, near the New Mexico line.
An Amtrak spokesperson told NBC station KUSA of Denver that the train, which was traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, had 286 passengers on board.
