The girl said yes. The principal said no.
A high school student in Washington state was suspended for five days after he asked a girl to the prom by strapping a fake bomb to his waist. He did it with a sign: “I’m kinda the bomb! Will u be my date to prom?”
The student, Ibrahim Ahmad, a senior at La Center High School, was also banned from the prom. The punishment was handed down on Wednesday.
He had worked up the nerve and asked his date in the cafeteria, in front of classmates. He told NBC affiliate KGW that he made the fake bomb out of an old paintball vest, red paper tubes and stray wires.
“I thought it looked really corny,” he said.
He told The Columbian newspaper that it was a “promposal,” so the idea was to go big.
“I’m Middle Eastern, and I thought the bomb was kind of funny and clever,” he told the newspaper. “I wasn’t wearing the vest for more than, like, 20 seconds. I asked her, took a picture, took it off, and then the school got upset.”
Ahmad told KGW that some of the faculty even wished him luck before he asked. Mark Mansell, the district superintendent, was not amused.
“Given all that is going on in the world today, even simulated weapons/devices can undermine our collective efforts to create a safe school and therefore are handled appropriate disciplinary actions,” he said in a statement.
