Diane Sawyer, the long-time anchor of ABC's "World News," is stepping down in September, the network announced on Wednesday. In a statement, ABC News said that George Stephanopoulos is being promoted to "chief anchor of ABC News handling special reports and breaking news" and David Muir will become anchor and managing editor of World News starting September 2
Sawyer, who had held the anchor job since December 2009, will lead "new programming tackling big issues and extraordinary interviews," according to the statement. She will likely fill the void left by the Barbara Walters' retirement in May.
"We have an extraordinary team of anchors who are gifted storytellers and uniquely skilled broadcasters," ABC News President James Goldston said in the statement. "For years to come, they will inspire us all to do our best work and set a high bar for excellence to inform, empower and inspire our viewers."
