Editor's note: Because of incorrect information provided by authorities, NBC News and other outlets incorrectly reported earlier Sunday that nine people died in Saturday's bus crash. Webb County Medical Examiner Corinne Stern said Sunday afternoon that eight deaths had been confirmed.
Texas authorities released the names of all eight people who died after a charter bus rolled over on a highway in a crash that injured more than 40 other people.
The National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived Sunday in Laredo to try to find the cause of the crash, which happened on northbound Highway 83 in Webb County near the Mexican border about 11:25 a.m. (12:25 p.m. ET) Saturday.
Seven people, who were all ejected from the bus, died at the scene, and another died at the hospital Saturday.
Webb County Medical Examiner Corinne Stern said the crash was the "worst commercial vehicle accident" she had seen in the decade she had worked for the county. She identified the victims as Altagracia Torres, Maria de Jesus Musquiz, Dora Nelly Gonzalez, Frances Guerrero, Marisela Lopez, Adelfa Garza, Jaime Navarro and Emma Rodriguez Zamudio.
Most were in their 50s or 60s, but the oldest was 83, and all were Latino Americans, Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina said at a news conference. All were U.S. citizens.
Forty-four other people were injured in the crash while they were en route from Rio Grande north to Eagle Pass, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Saturday. The driver survived, officials said.
It wasn't clear whether the group was with an organization or what they were traveling for.
"I ask the entire State of Texas to keep the families of loved ones lost today, as well as the Dimmit County community, in its thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement Saturday night.
