The death of a Michigan mom who was fatally mauled after she climbed into a yard containing pit bulls has been ruled a suicide, officials said.
But the organizers of a fund-raising site for victim Rebecca Lillian-Kay Hardy say they don't believe her "intention was ever suicide," and noted that Port Huron police are continuing to investigate the death.
Hardy "was walking home from the store when she took a short cut through a yard, and was met by the residents' dog in the yard," the GoFundMe page says. "She was was viciously attacked by this dog and later passed away from her severe injuries. It is unknown if she was aware of a dog in the yard."
The 22-year-old Port Huron woman suffered severe facial and neck injuries in the Dec. 3 attack, police said.
Hardy’s death was officially ruled a suicide by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Port Huron Police said in a statement.
“The manner of death was determined based on information given to police by witnesses during the investigation,” the statement read.
The owner of the dogs, described as a pit bull and a pit bull-husky mix, has not been charged with a crime and is cooperating with investigators.
