The casket containing the body of firefighter Michael R. Kennedy is lowered from Engine 33 before his funeral outside Holy Name Church in West Roxbury, Mass., on Thursday. Kennedy and Boston Fire Lt. Edward J. Walsh died on March 26 when they became trapped in the basement of a burning brownstone during a nine-alarm blaze in the historic Back Bay neighborhood.
Walsh's funeral was held yesterday in Watertown, Mass., as the events were staggered to allow thousands of mourners the opportunity to honor each man individually. Both Walsh and Kennedy will be posthumously awarded Medals of Valor, the highest honor a firefighter can earn.
