The body parts of a child were found in Chicago’s Garfield Park on Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Police Department said.
Officials said a child’s left foot was discovered near the park’s lagoon at around 5:40 p.m. ET.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that officers subsequently discovered a right foot and a hand in the park's lagoon about 25 yards away. The remains were badly decomposed, he said
A 20-pound weight was also found near the body parts, Guglielmi said
The search resumed Sunday morning and Guglielmi said the department's marine unit and divers had as of late in the morning had not found any additional body parts.
He said other items of interest were found but he declined to comment further. He also said that, depending on what searchers and divers find, the lagoon might be drained to make sure there are no more remains in it.
Investigators haven't determined the child's identity or how the child died, Guglielmi said. He said detectives were going through Chicago-area missing persons cases to determine if there could be any link to the remains.
