The woman who spent more than a decade on the run with Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger was indicted Tuesday for refusing to testify before a grand jury about who helped them while they were fugitives.
Catherine Greig, 64, is already serving an eight-year sentence for conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy. The indictment adds a charge of criminal contempt for refusing to talk to the grand jury beginning last December.
“Catherine Greig has yet again failed to do the right thing,” Joseph R. Bonavolonta, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston field division, said in a statement.
Bulger fled Boston in 1994 and was a fugitive until he was captured in 2011 in California, where he had been living with Greig. Authorities found more than $800,000 cash and 30 weapons in the apartment, most hidden in the walls.
Bulger was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders. Now 86, he is serving life in prison.
Prosecutors said Greig helped Bulger by taking him to medical appointments and pretending to be his wife so she could pick up his prescriptions.
When she was sentenced, her lawyer called Bulger “the love of her life.”
Greig was found in civil contempt in December, when she first refused to testify to the grand jury. She could face more prison time if convicted on the criminal-contempt charge. There is no maximum penalty.
