The teenage boy bitten by a shark on a North Carolina island is heading home after being successfully treated and released in good condition from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Hunter Treschl, 16, lost his arm below the shoulder after the shark attack he said he didn't see coming in Oak Island on Sunday afternoon.
NHRMC released a statement wishing Treschl continued success in his recovery and supporting he and his family's wishes for privacy.
The medical center expressed thanks to the physicians, staff and community for their care and support during Treschl's time at NHRMC.
In comments released by Treschl's family on Wednesday, the teen said he felt the shark bite his leg, "and then I saw that it had attacked my arm because it was out of the water a little bit."
"I've lost my arm obviously, so I have two options: I can try to live my life the way I was and make an effort to do that even though I don't have an arm, or I can just let this be completely debilitating and bring my life down and ruin it," Treschl added. "Out of those two, there's really only one that I would actually choose, and that's to try to fight and live a normal life with the cards I've been dealt."
