U.S. Border Patrol agents have shot and killed a man who officials say drove through a West Texas checkpoint.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement Friday about the shooting. The agency said it happened around 5 p.m. Thursday, after a motorist pulled into the inspection lane at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10 in Sierra Blanca, about 80 miles southeast of El Paso.
The statement says the man failed to stop, prompting a 30-mile pursuit by Border Patrol agents. When the vehicle finally stopped, two agents approached and opened fire on the driver. The statement doesn't say what provoked the agents, but it says a pistol-shaped pellet gun was recovered from the vehicle.
A message left with a Border Patrol spokesman in El Paso wasn't returned.
