The Washington County Sheriff's Office said Lt. Tion Augustine has been hospitalized and undergone surgery following the shooting Tuesday just outside of Fayetteville.

Twenty-four-year-old Raymond Plumee has been charged with attempted murder.

Plumee's mother and father had called police at around 1:20 p.m. (2:20 p.m. ET) on Tuesday to say their son had a shotgun and was claiming that "if the police showed up today, he was going to die," according to a preliminary report by district prosecutor Matt Durrett.

The suspect's parents said their son was " a danger," "psychotic and suicidal... and for officers to use caution if they encountered him," Durrett’s report added.

It said Augustine — along with another deputy and several officers from the Fayetteville Police Department — went to an address in an attempt to locate Plumee and was shot after officers heard gunfire from a nearby wooded area and went to investigate.

The sheriff's office said Augustine was rushed to the hospital with "life-threatening" injuries, later adding that he had undergone surgery and was recovering in the ICU.

Plumlee and a shotgun were found a short time later, according to the prosecutor, who described the suspect as "uncooperative with investigators."

Plumee was transported to the Washington County Jail and booked on charges of attempted murder, terroristic threatening, battery and domestic battering.
