Two pilots died after their light aircraft collided during an informal aviation event in Nevada, officials said. The single-engine Cessna 170 collided with a home-built ICP Savannah at a "fly-in" over a dry lake bed in Lyon County in the southwest of the state, said FAA Spokesman Ian Gregor in an email. The crash happened at 8 a.m. Sunday, 10 miles northwest of the small town of Yerington, he added.
Sgt. Ryan Powell at the Lyon County Sheriff's Office told the Reno Gazette-Journal that the two planes collided and then crashed into the side of a hill. Witnesses at the gathering told the newspaper that they were around a campfire waiting for breakfast when they heard a "pop" and saw debris falling. "Everyone was in shock," restaurant owner Jack Lyons told the paper. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
